Mesquite Bean for October

The Mesquite Bean

Newsletter for Christian Cowboy Fellowship, Roswell NM, October Edition 2008

Dear Fellowship Family,

Praying all is well, and you all are growing in the Lord daily. I have a question for you all…are you a fence post? ( the fence post part will come next month) Or are you a tumblweed?

As a farmer’s daughter I have an aversion to weeks. Any kind of weeds. Weeds are not our friends. Did you know that there were no weeds in the Garden of Eden? Yep it’s true. But after the fall, guess what popped up? Weeds.

One of the most detestable weeds that I detest is tumbleweeds. Being sent to the cotton field as a young child with a pair of cotton gloves and a hoe is not a fond memory. I hate to hoe, and I hate weeds. But tumbleweeds….those are the worst. After they get any size on them at all they are horrible. They are prickly and hard to get too and just generally a nuisance. And once they are mature and die then they just turn lose from the ground and off they go. Tumbling here and there, spreading their tiny seeds, so the next year you will be assured of an even bigger and better crop of tumbleweeds. Not to mention that they ball up on anything that gets in their way. Fences seem to be the favorite. If you have ever had to pull tumbleweeds off of a fence, then you know what I am talking about. It is a chore. And the next time the wind blows guess what happens? You have to do it all over again.

I remember one time we were driving somewhere and we came upon this car, I think it was a station wagon, it was pulled over to the side of the road. Out in the field there were a couple and a few little kids, and they were picking up, you guessed it, tumbleweeds. My dad just looked, and shook his head. Then made mention that when they got back east, they were from New Hampshire or somewhere, that they, and their neighbors would be sorry they had ever transported those weeds back home.

Now what does a tumbleweed have to do with anything spiritual? Well it is like this. Every time I see a tumbleweed going by, it reminds me of how easy it is to be swayed, in our beliefs. In this day and time, it seems more than ever we are inundated by false teachers. False teaching abounds. Sadly it is not only cults that do this anymore. The Church is full, and getting fuller of false teachings. Teachings that do not line up with the word of God. And even more sad, is that people are laping it up like cream. They are like the tumbleweeds. They are not grounded in what the word has to say, and so they just tumble from one belief, one teaching, one teacher to another. Just tumbling along, and never taking root. Every time the wind blows something new down the road, off they go chasing after it.

I don’t want to be a tumbleweed. I want to be firmly planted in good soil. I want to be strong in my faith. I want to be rooted in the word of God, so that when the winds blow those roots will hold, and be strong. Not blown away rolling aimlessly down the road. I want to be a fence post…but you will have to wait till next month for that…..

I pray that none of you want to be tumbleweeds. That you all want to be rooted in the word of God. Not just tumbling aimlessly through life going which ever way the winds blow. But desire to stand steadfastly in your relationship with Christ.

I leave you with this… “ Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16, vs. 13 NKJV

God Bless and Happy Trails
